Corner Indie Fest was created by two music students, Olivia Bona (UVA '15) and Joanna Spotswood (UVA '16), with the help of Unresume, a start-up group at HackCville. Olivia and Jo planned to make it an annual event which would grow each year, and to leave it as a legacy at UVa.
The idea began in April 2013 when Jo met Nico Gendron (UVA '15) and Lindsey Bond (UVA '15) at a networking luncheon. Over coffee a few days later, Nico told Jo about Unresume which she and Lindsey were starting at HackCville. Unresume encouraged UVa students to embrace their passions for the sake of those passions, not to bolster a resume. Jo had always wanted to make a music festival, and so she sought out fellow music major Olivia. They went into planning the festival as equal partners and co-creators.
Planning started in September 2013 during Unresume meetings at HackCville where ideas were thrown around by friends of Unresume, HackCville founder Spencer Ingram, and whoever else stopped in. The rest of the planning was done by Jo and Olivia from December 2013 on, with the input of their Unresume family always appreciated. And the rest is evolving history.
Olivia and Jo's music festival vision changed and evolved many times. They learned how to narrow down and focus their energies, beginning the festival as a band night in the top floor of a coffee shop. The energy of the event was truly unique -- a community formed at the intimate event which has followed the festival and grown each year. As time has gone on, more and more of Jo and Olivia's ideas have been realized. Jo's original vision came to life May 3rd, 2016 when Corner Indie Fest shut down Elliewood Avenue for the love of music!
It's a Corner Indie Fest for the love of music!
It's not for profit, though one day it will generate it.
Not for resumes, though it will end up on there, ironically.
Not for the purpose of leaving a legacy, though it will.
Just for music!
Love it, share it, experience it.
